A Stone Sat Still by Brendan Wenzel (Picture Book Review)

A Stone Sat Still

Genre: Children's, Picture Books
Length: 50 pages

Ages: 3 - 5 years

Synopsis:

The follow-up to They All Saw A Cat

A Stone Sat Still tells the story of a seemingly ordinary rock--but to the animals that use it, it is a resting place, a kitchen, a safe haven...even an entire world.

Our Thoughts:
This fantastic picture book shows us a simple stone in the world and then shows us the many perspectives of animals and other critters and what the stone is to each of them. A pebble, a hill, a marker, a map, a maze--the stone is always there but looks different to everything that crosses its path.

While this book is clearly trying to show a difference in perspectives, I found it also to be quite relaxing and meditative as a read aloud. The illustrations are quite lovely as well, with soft but textured and collaged spreads interspersed with adorable critters. Even the naked cover is beautiful with an overlapping snail slime trail maze that can only be seen if tilted just so.

Animal and nature lovers will adore this book.

We borrowed this from the library without realizing that it is a follow-up picture book so I don't know the relationship between the two or if I'm missing some part of a bigger story so we will check out They All Saw A Cat as soon as possible. We were still blown away by A Stone Sat Still on its own though.
