2014 End of Year Book Survey

The Annual End of Year Book Survey was created by Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner

Number of books I read:
According to Goodreads, I have read 56 books this year.

Number of re-reads:

Two. I re-read 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry and 'The Sign of the Beaver' by Elizabeth George Speare

Genre I read the most from:

I'm not positive which genre I read the most of. I didn't really stick to any specific genres this year. I did read a lot of children's books and book to movie adaptations if those count at all.

1. Best book I read in 2014:
I honestly can't say exactly. It's a tie between the first book I read in 2014 which was 'Cloud Atlas' by David Mitchell and 'Cinder' by Marissa Meyer.

2. A book I was excited about & thought I was going to love more than I actually did:

'Blood and Chocolate' by Annette Curtis Klause.
I watched the movie adaptation years ago and sort of enjoyed it. The book was nothing like the movie and kind of bored me to death! I wonder if I would have enjoyed the movie if I had read the book first.

3. Most surprising book I read (in either a good or bad way):
'Rotters' by Daniel Kraus
I was surprised by the morbid content of this book.

4. Book I pushed people to read:
The only book I think I can count here is 'The Maze Runner' by James Dashner which I pushed my older sister to read at the same time as me.

5. Best series I started:
The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

Best sequel I read:

The Son of Neptune (The Heroes of Olympus #2) by Rick Riordan

6. Favorite new author I discovered in 2014:

This would probably have to be Marissa Meyer since I read more than one book of hers in 2014, enjoyed both, and can't wait to read more.

7. Best book from a genre I don't typically read:

'The 5 People You Meet In Heaven' by Mitch Albom
I'm not positive what genre this is (contemporary? literary fiction?) but it counts because I read books in those genres less often. It was pretty good, too.

8. Most action packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year:

Hmm. There are a few books that would fit in here (such as 'A Storm of Swords' and 'The Maze Runner') but I didn't read them in one quick sitting or even if a few short sittings. Instead, I'll name one that really fit the bill since I read it pretty quickly: 'The Blood Guard' by Roy Carter.

9. Book I read this year that I will most likely re-read next year:

I probably won't re-read anything from 2014 but there are a few children's books that I want to re-read out loud to my daughter including Harry Potter, Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, etc.

10. Favorite cover of a book I read in 2014:

The book was 'so-so' but I LOVE the cover.

11. Most memorable character of 2014:

Cinder wins.

12. Most beautifully written book I read:

'Between the Spark and the Burn' by April Genevieve Tucholke
I didn't really like the story but the writing was something else. Like being in a dream.

13. Most thought provoking / life changing book I read:

A tie between 'The 5 People You Meet In Heaven' by Mitch Albom and 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens.

14. The book I can't believe I waited til 2014 to read:

'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens.
This is such a beautiful story! I've watched lots of the movie adaptations but this was my first time reading the book.

15. Favorite passage/quote from a book I read in 2014:
“All parents damage their children. It cannot be helped. Youth, like pristine glass, absorbs the prints of its handlers. Some parents smudge, others crack, a few shatter childhoods completely into jagged little pieces, beyond repair.”

- 'The Five People You Meet In Heaven' by Mitch Albom

16. Shortest and longest books I read in 2014:
Shortest: One of the children's books I read. Not sure which.
Longest: A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin

17. A book that shocked me the most:

Beloved by Toni Morrison

18. OTP of the year:

(One True Pairing)
I honestly don't know how to answer this. It isn't something I pay any attention to.

19. Favorite non-romantic relationship of the year:

Meh. Again, I don't know how to answer this.

20. Favorite book read in 2014 from an author that I've read previously:

'Matilda' by Roald Dahl

21. Best book I read in 2014 that I read based solely on a recommendation from someone else:

The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom
(My mom recommended I read it.)

22. Newest fictional crush from a book I read this year:

I honestly don't care for crushing on fictional characters.

23. Best 2014 debut book I read:

I think that the only one I read was 'The Blood Guard' by Carter Roy

24. Best worldbuilding/most vivid setting I read:

Both 'Cloud Atlas' and 'Cinder' had great worldbuilding and vivid settings.

25. Book that put a smile on my face / was the most fun to read:

'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' by Roald Dahl

26. A book that made me cry or nearly cry:

I didn't read any books that made me overly emotional.

27. Hidden gem of the year:

'Wilderness: The Lost Writings' by Jim Morrison
I found this book of Morrison's poetry in a thrift store and enjoyed it despite that some of it was really weird and 'whacked out'.

28. A book that crushed my soul:

None of the books I read this year crushed my soul. :(

29. Most unique book I read in 2014:

Probably 'Wilderness: The Lost Writings' by Jim Morrison. It was definitely different.

30. The book that made me most mad (even if I liked it):

'The Little Prince' by Antoine de Saint-Exupery
I just couldn't come to terms with the ending!

1. New favorite book blog I discovered in 2014:

Thanks to Bloglovin, I've followed a ton of new blogs and I keep up with all the latest posts so it's too difficult to choose just one!

2. Favorite review I wrote in 2014:
I really don't like my own reviews! I always think they are lacking! I didn't write very many this year, either.

3. Best discussion/non-review post I had on my blog:

I don't really have discussion posts on my blog but I will attempt to do more in the future!
4. Best event I participated in:

Bout of Books Read-a-thon
(Always my favorite!)

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2014:

I just feel like the worst at answering these questions right now! I've been too preoccupied with pregnancy (and having my little one) to remember much of this year!

6. It's missing!

7. Most popular post on my blog this year (either views or comments)

Post with the most comments (a whopping SIXTEEN!) was my Stacking the Shelves #31 post. I'm actually going to start 'We Were Liars' tomorrow!
8. A post that I wish had gotten a little more love:

All of them?!

9. Best bookish discovery:

I'm usually making all sorts of bookish discoveries but like I said previously, I was way too preoccupied this year.

10. The reading goals/challenges I finished that I set for myself this year:

I made a 'Revisiting My Goals for 2014' post that you can check out!

1. One book I didn't get to this year that will be my #1 priority in 2015:

I've got a little list going!
'We Were Liars'
'The Winners Curse'
'Talon' by Julie Kagawa
'Storm Siren'

2. A non-debut book I am most anticipating in 2015:

It's a little difficult to choose just one yet so here is a LIST of one's I'm excited about.

3. A debut book I am most anticipating:

I'm not exactly sure which debut novels are coming out yet.

4. Series ending or sequel I am most anticipating in 2015:

The Black Reckoning (The Books of Beginning #3) by John Stephens

5. One thing I hope to do/accomplish in my reading/blogging life in 2015

Possibly redesign the blog
Participate in a read-a-thon or two

6. A 2015 release that I have already read and recommend:

I haven't read any.

Book Blogger Hop (Dec 26 - Jan 1)

The Book Blogger Hop is hosted at Ramblings Of A Coffee Addicted Writer and this week's question is:

Do you have a book with a location that you just HAD to visit after reading the book?

I wish I could visit any location other than where I am!

I don't think I can pinpoint any one book, but I've been reading and loving books set in England for years and it's a big dream of mine to go there someday. There are so many places in the UK that I'd love to visit, including London, Stonehenge, and many castles.

Likewise, I love books set in the mountains (think the Appalachian Mountains or the Great Smokey Mountains) and though I've driven through them twice in my life to visit family up north, I've never really been able to stop and explore the way I've wanted to. I'd love to take a road trip up to the mountains someday and go camping and hiking.

Wouldn't it be lovely to fall in love with a location after reading a book and set off for it immediately? That would be the life!

Book Review: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Title: A Christmas Carol
Author: Charles Dickens
Publication Date: first published December 19, 1843
Genre: classic
Length: 106 pages
Source: purchased

SYNOPSIS:
The story of Ebenezer Scrooge opens on a Christmas Eve as cold as Scrooge's own heart. That night, he receives three ghostly visitors: the terrifying spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Each takes him on a heart-stopping journey, yielding glimpses of Tiny Tim and Bob Cratchit, the horrifying spectres of Want and Ignorance, even Scrooge's painfully hopeful younger self. Will Scrooge's heart be opened? Can he reverse the miserable future he is forced to see?

MY THOUGHTS:
It's pretty likely that you are very familiar with this story even if you've never read the book (as long as you celebrate Christmas, that is). There have been countless adaptations of this story and I have seen almost all of them but am just now reading 'A Christmas Carol' for the first time. As a fan of Dickens it was well worth my time to read this classic despite knowing the story by heart. I love and fully understand the old-fashioned prose that can sometimes confuse newer readers and found it to be extremely enjoyable.

I think the most important thing to take away from this book is not just how you should feel about Christmas, but how you should feel about life in general. There are so many 'Scrooge's out there in the world that it makes me glad that we have a holiday that embodies all that is good and cheerful in humanity and reminds us to be our best, most caring selves. And this is coming from someone who has never really been a big fan of Christmas. (I wear my Grinch cap with pride!) I hope more people take the time to read this classic tale and I hope that it can change them, too.

'A Christmas Carol' has such a great message to impart that I would love to make it a family tradition to read this book every December.

Top Ten Books I Wouldn't Mind Santa Bringing Me For Christmas

I read Cinder and Scarlet recently and I really want to continue the series!

I've been waiting too long for this. I've almost forgotten the first two.

I really want to read the book before the movie comes out!

I started A Feast For Crows but I hate not having the next book in the series so I've put off finishing it for now. I'd love to continue this awesome series!

I really want to have this book to read to my daughter at Christmas for years to come.

Considering that fantasy is my favorite genre, it doesn't make much sense that I haven't started this series despite owning 'Throne of Glass', but after getting burned out on waiting for other series sequels I just wanted to be able to marathon the first couple of books without a long wait inbetween so I NEED this book NOW!

Santa might as well bring me this one, too, so I can read all three in one go.

I've been looking for a copy of this for the longest time.

Book Blogger Hop (Dec 19 - 25)

The Book Blogger Hop is hosted at Ramblings Of A Coffee Addicted Writer and this week's question is:

Do you write a review for every book you read or only review copies from publishers?

I don't write a review for every book I read. I try to when I'm not so busy (and I've been way too busy lately) but I have a habit of putting off writing reviews for too long or starting a new book right after finishing the last and not giving myself time to reflect unless it's really worth reflecting on.

If I don't write a full review for my blog, I will at least write up a few thoughts for Goodreads.

If I receive a book from Goodreads' 'First Reads' or if I sign up for a book tour, etc, I will make a point to review that book, though.

Revisiting 2014 - SERIES

Series. Sometimes I hate them.
There are just so many and I tend to start way more than I ever finish as seen in my 'Series I Started & Series I Finished in 2013' post. Waiting on sequels to release really doesn't help at all and after a while I start to lose track so I need a list so I can maybe possibly finish them in the future.

Series I Started in 2014

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland In A Ship Of Her Own Making (Fairyland #1) by Catherynne M. Valente

The Companions (The Sundering #1) by R.A. Salvatore
(following books in this series by various authors)

The Maze Runner (#1) by James Dashner

The Ring and the Crown (#1) by Melissa De La Cruz

Cinder & Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles #1 & #2) by Marissa Meyer

Tuesdays at the Castle (Castle Glower #1) by Jessica Day George

Series I Made Progress In

Hollow City (Miss Peregrine's #2) by Ransom Riggs

Sweetly (Fairytale Retellings #2) by Jackson Pearce

A Storm Of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire #3) by George R.R. Martin

A Feast For Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire #4) by George R.R. Martin

The Son of Neptune (The Heroes of Olympus #2) by Rick Riordan

The Infinite Sea (The 5th Wave #2) by Rick Yancey

Series I Finished in 2014

Between the Spark and the Burn (Between #2) by April Genevieve Tucholke
(does this count as a series if it only has 2 books?)

Eleanor Trilogy by Julie Sternberg
(read all 3 books this year)

Book Blogger Hop (Dec 12 - 18)

The Book Blogger Hop is hosted at Ramblings Of A Coffee Addicted Writer and this week's question is:

How many books do you read in a week?
How many hours a day do you spend reading?

If I had been asked this last year, I would have had a completely different answer. Even then it depended on the day and I might have read for an hour or two on no set schedule throughout the day.

But this year is different. Much different.
With a newborn, I have little to no time to read. I do try to read to my daughter every day, if only just a few pages of whatever I'm reading for me or a short quick picture book from the little library I've accumulated for her.

I also now have a cheap tablet to read on which means if I'm awake in the middle of the night I'll read for a little while. In the past, I couldn't turn on a light to read without the risk of waking up the hubby. This newborn business is all very new to me, though, so I don't know how long it will all last. I could be up all night with the baby or passed out from exhaustion. For now, it's looking to be maybe a half hour tops of reading per day, though.

Book Blast & Giveaway: Tears For A World

Tears for a world

Tears for a World by Alexander Fernandez

The holy artifact bonded around Marisylia Malludar's neck gives her incredible physical and magical powers—at a price. The bloody piece of vein is consuming Marisylia's body inch by inch, her skeletal hands and feet only the beginning of a slow death. A cruel sorceress and her assassins are on the hunt for Marisylia to steal the artifact. Religious fanatics, volatile and unstable in their blind faith, also seek her to exploit the vein’s most dangerous purpose—liberating the erratic Creator of the World, Lysielle, from her 1,000 year incarceration. With the vein the key to Lysielle’s freedom, Marisylia must use her abilities to survive long enough to find Lysielle first. Then her most grim challenge awaits—deciding if the Creator has truly repented for attempting to destroy all life. To achieve global peace, Marisylia must discover faith in the unpredictable Lysielle or rely on her own instincts to set the world’s fate.

  Excerpt:

Marisylia blinked and rubbed milk out of her eyes, but the mob wasn’t finished. A stiff hand shoved her from behind and she stumbled against the table. Unfinished slices of pie and rolls of bread pelted her. With nowhere to hide, she dove into the horde and tried to shove her way out. Most of the people only yelled insults as they let her pass. Others bumped her roughly with their shoulders, tried to trip her, or pushed her around so she bounced back and forth between pairs of hands. One woman caught Marisylia and carefully steadied her. She peered into the woman’s eyes, one friendly person amid the riled swarm. The lady smiled softly, then suddenly spit into Marisylia’s face. When the saliva splattered her cheek, Marisylia stopped caring why the citizens acted like this. Whether due to fear of the religious power, worry that it would infest Three Fingers, or simply senseless anger, none of it mattered anymore since the time to quit had arrived. All of her determination to succeed had been ripped to shreds by the crowd. Each hand that shoved, every object that struck, drained her enthusiasm. Her devotion to the religion had drowned in the woman’s spit. It was all too much. Marisylia didn’t have Milick’s iron skin or Shri Lilyn’s boldness. She had nothing, only the desire to run away and forget everything.

Revisiting 2014 - Goals/Resolutions

I've already started my 2015 Resolutions/Goals list (a few months ago, to be honest) and wanted to revisit this past year's goals and see how I did with them.

Disclaimer: I had 3 months of morning sickness that didn't even allow me to read Facebook messages let alone a book and the rest of the year was busy, busy, busy. A big chunk of my year seems to have disappeared so I did really bad on my goals!

Let's revisit THIS Top Ten Tuesday and see how I did with those resolutions!

1. Read 100 books
2. Read more classics
3. Read more children's books
4. Read at least 5 books from the 1000 Books To Read Before You Die list
5.  Read at least 5 banned or challenged books
6. Do the 26 book ABC Challenge
7. Dothe Book Genre Challenge
8. Take more pictures of books
9. Read all the books that are being turned into movies
10. Write more of my own book

1. Read 100 Books
Nope. Didn't happen. I cut my Goodreads goal back to 50 books and I'm currently only 2 books away from that goal. So not too bad, but I read a lot of children's books this year.
2. Read more classics
A big fail. I think I read 2-3 classics which, compared to previous years, is nothing.
3. Read more children's books
Yay! Something I did accomplish! I read at least 20 children's books this year. Wasn't hard since I decided to read aloud to my baby girl in utero!
4. Read at least 5 books from the 1000 Books to Read Before You Die List
Another fail. I read 2 and am currently reading 2.
5. Read at least 5 banned or challenged books
Yay! I did read 5! Beloved, Blood and Chocolate, Child Of God, Tiger Eyes, and I re-read The Giver!
6. Do the 26 book ABC Challenge
I did participate and keep track of this challenge but I did not read a book for each letter of the alphabet. So... fail.
7. Do the Book Genre Challenge
This was a pretty big fail. I only participated in one month in which I coincidentally read a fairytale retelling (Cinder).
8. Take more pictures of books
I love photography but I really slacked off on this goal.
9. Read all the books that are being turned into movies
ALL? That would take forever! I did read 13 books that were or would be adapted into movies and the 2 books I am currently reading are also adaptations.
10. Write more of my own book
Biggest fail of all. I don't think I wrote a single sentence all year. :(

Here is a bigger list of goals and specific books that I wanted to read that I have gone back and crossed out if I got around to them.

So, yeah, it wasn't the greatest year and I'll probably have even less time for any of these next year but it won't stop me from having outrageous goals or making lists!
